A friend has an old Compaq computer, operating with Windows 95 which he uses
as a Word Processor. He asked me to set up a dial-up connection to the
Internet for him.
I purchaesd an external 56Kb modem - US Robotics and obtained an Internet
access CD from British Telecom. This CD inclusdes all their service
offerings, you just chose the one you want. I checked that both the both
modem and the Internet access would work with Windows 95.
I installed the the modem successfully - or at least it appears to be OK. I
connected it to the COM1 port. I checked " Modems" in the Control Panel and
also the PC seems top be communicating with the modem.
I then tried to install the Internet access software from the CD. I loaded
the CD andit began to to run However a message appeared Not enough space on
your hard drive to install software You need 350MB.
Using Explorer I checked the free space, it indicated that 633MB was
available, the total memory is only1.5Gb. To be sure I unintalled an an old
drawing packege that was on the machine. The free space increased to 691Mb
but the same error message appeared when I tried to run the Internet CD.
I did defragment the disk and aslo checked for disk errors - all seemed OK.
I then contacted the BT help desk and explained the situation. With the guy
on the phone he instructed me to open My Computer and then access the Dial-up
Networking icon. I did so but it would not respond, I tried several times
with exactly the same result. His only reaction was to say - your machines
operating system is corrupted, I cannot help you, goodby and rang off.

The machine is working in all other respects - MSWORD 97 and EXCELL both
work perfectly.

Do you think the Windows 95 is indeed corrupted. How can I check and if it
is corrupted where can I get another copy. Is there any other reason for the
problem.

You don't need the internet access software to set up a DUN connection. All
you need is a phone number and the username/password combo. Unless the ISP
is a dinosaur, you don't even need to specify DNS servers, or any of that
other stuff. In fact I recommend *never* installing ISP software. Just go to
Dial-Up Networking, in Control Panel, and set up the connection. One caveat:
After setting up the DUN connection, go into its Properties, on the Servers
tab, and uncheck "Log on to network". Also disable all protocols except
TCP/IP.

Hi Gary
Thanks for the comments. I have made further progrees on the problem I
described in my first Post. I cannot get to the stage you have mentioned
because my Dial-up Networking function is not working, the files are missing.
I have been told I will have to obtain a replacement copy of Windows 95 or
more likely Windows 98.

Well, yes. You need a copy of the installation files to install almost any
network apparatus. But you do *not* need any of the ISP's software.

You don't know anyone who might still have a copy of Win95? There's no
licensing issues involved if you use someone else's disk for this purpose.

It is now clear that the message generated by the BT Internet Access CD -
"Not enough memory, you need 350MB" is an unrelated issue to the dial-up
problems which as a said in my previous post have been solved. Out of
curiosity do you have any ideas why it should still generate this message. As
a test I down loaded about 400Mb of digital photos and other software into a
TEST folder and they were all copied successfully so I know there certainly
was more than 350MB of space available. Perhaps I will ask the BT help desk.

Perhaps it's a bug in their install. It may be that they are trying to
install an updated version of Internet Explorer, which can take quite a
bit of space. If they are trying to install IE 6, that won't work on
Win95. The newest version that Win95 will run is IE 5.5.
