I need a newer version of Threed.vbx. Much to my surprise, I can't
find it on the web. Apparently it is shipped with proprietary
software.

Could anybody point me?

Thanks

DeLa,
From the file properties, what version do you have, size, date. The
date, unfortunately can sometimes be deceiving, because it often get set
to the date some developer compiles there latest and greatest.

The message "THREED.VBX is out of date" is a common one, DeLa. Unfortunately,
there are several versions of this vbx floating around because many application
developers have made their own.

Threed.vbx is a Visual Basic control to enhance images by giving a "3D" effect.
It is distributed by the applications that use it.

There has been a recent effort to control the versions. According to Microsoft
(http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q126/7/28.asp), the latest
version is 3.0a dated 7/16/93, 64,432 bytes.

Frequently, the trouble is caused by an application installing an old copy of
Threed.vbx in the Windows directory. Since most programs leave the search to
Windows and it looks first in the Windows directory, the correct one in
Windows\System will not be located. So start by checking for a Threed.vbx in the
Windows directory.

If that's not the trouble, the usual fix is to remove or rename the Threed.vbx
file and reinstall the application that complains over the current installation.
A file compatible with that application will be installed. (Another way is to
expand the Threed.vb_ file from the application's installation floppies.)

Thank you Jerry for this information.

As far as I could see, the package did not provide the
threed.vbx-file. It supposes there is one present. Is that
possible?

Where do I find the resource kit? Buy it at MS?

Jerry,
Made this observation after seeing your info on the threed.vbx version. Mine is
v3.0.1.0 and dated the day after on 7/17/93 by Sheidan Software Sys. Has the exact
same file size though.

It is unfortunate that so many false assumptions were made by installers with
inadequate version control instructions.

Well, folks,

Let's see what we got . . .

In Crystal Reports for Windows, I find a 64,544 B dated 12/24/93 3.0.0.6
In Sheridan Software Data Widgets, I find a 64,432 B dated 7/16/93 3.0.1.0
In some original software that we developed and exported, I find a 55,248 B
dated 5/4/92 (this one is really old! Looks like Version 1.0f originally
dated 6 Jan 92), and
In \Windows\System, I find a 65,544 B dated 11/23/97 (!?) and marked as
3.0.0.6

Another fine example of version control and configuration management.
. . . .

I've not encountered that situation, DeLa. Visual Basic developers often assume
that the relevant VBRUNx00.DLL (x=1,2,3) is present. But Threed.vbx should be
part of the installation. Check for the compressed file Threed.vb_.

The one for Windows 3.1x is downloadable from Microsoft. Let me know if you're
interested in that.

The one for Windows for Workgroups 3.11 was for sale on paper (mostly). But the
WUGNET group put it into machine-readable form. See my recent message below.

I didn't know that Microsoft had made a machine-readable WFWG Resource Kit,
Anna. I thought it was a book. Can you give me a reference in MSDN?

The WUGNET group, however, *has* put it in machine-readable form and made it a
free download from a Compuserve forum. If you have access to Compuserve, GO
WINUSER. I'm not sure what you can access if you're not a Compuserve member, but
the web address for that forum is

http://go.compuserve.com/winuser

For those who can obtain access: Once there, you will need to download the
following files from the WUGNET Online Section (#2) that forum's library:
WRK*.EXE (4 files) and follow these instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR WFWG RESOURCE KIT
==================================
Please make four temporary directories named disk1, disk2, disk3, and
disk4 and place WRK1.EXE in disk1, WRK2.EXE in disk2, WRK3.EXE in disk3,
and WRK4.EXE in disk4. Extract the files by double-clicking SETUP.EXE.
When you have completed the setup from directory/folder "disk1, disk2,
disk3, and disk4," you must place these files in one directory/folder,
which you can name whatever you choose:

ADRU.DLL
HOOKDLL.DLL
MVIEWER2.EXE
SYSDEMO.EXE
M.MVB
SYSENG.PR

Execute (double-click) MVIEWER2.EXE, click "file," click "open," and
direct your mouse to M.MVB.

You might also want to download SE2DEM.ZIP (a somewhat disabled surprise package
as I recall).

Developers have a bad habit of changing file dates - usually, so that all the
files they distribute have the same date.

Right. But that's the environment we live in. And it continues to a large extent
in the newer versions of Windows.
