Simple: connect an external modem to a free serial port. If you want
to use an internal modem, set it up to use a free serial port number.
Since most PCs come with two COM ports and it is a bit tricky to use
other ports than COM 1 and COM 2, you may want to disable an unused
COM port to use this port number with your modem. On many systems, the
mouse is connected to COM 1 and COM 2 is free. So you may consult the
manual for your computer about how to disable the COM 2 port and then
add the modem card after you have set it to work as COM 2.
Next, install a communication program (or use Terminal which is part
of Windows v3.x). Make sure, that the program uses the correct COM
port of the modem. In most newer applications, you can select your
modem from a list in the settings. If there is no such list, you will
have to find out a generic initialization string for your modem.
Consult it's manual or it's manufacturer for support. If your modem is
not listed, try one of the standard (generic) entries. F. e. most
modems are Hayes-compatible, so selecting an entry for a
Hayes-compatible modem may work well.
