Sure, Russ.

Check for a line like

Device=Vdmad.386

in the [386Enh] section of System.ini. If it's there, disable it by placing a
semi-colon at the front.

If it's not there, please explain what you're doing when the message occurs and
quote the exact message.

Jerry,

Sorry about "goin' direct." I t won't happen again. Here's the problem. I'm
trying to use Microsoft Backup for Windows, Version 6. When i start the
program I get the message that it's not properly installed and that I have
to add VFINTD.386 to the 386Enh section of SYSTEM.INI of course. I don't
have that file anywhere on my system. So, I try to retrieve a catalog from
floppy and the error message is "The Virtual DMA Buffer Is In Use."

Please help. I'm trying to restore backups of 1997 and 1998 tax returns.

Thank you.

I don't know what you're up to there, Russ. So I'll need to cover some
possibilities here.

First, the MSBACKUP.EXE program in Windows 98 has nothing to do with the old DOS
program. Only the name is the same. Don't touch it.

Second, you should not try to use MWBACKUP.EXE (the old Windows version of
backup) in Windows 98. That, BTW, made the same backup file as the old DOS
program MSBACKUP.EXE. You may have used it to make the backups, but you won't
use it to restore them.

You *should* run the old DOS program MSBACKUP.EXE to restore your files. A DOS
program will give you no trouble with the device driver Vfintd.386 or any other
Windows module..

>> ..Version 6.

Is this the version of MS-DOS that was in use when the backups were made? That
is *very* important. Backups made with the version that came with DOS 6.0 and
6.2 are usually *not* compatible with the version (6.22) of MSBACKUP.EXE that
came with Windows 95 (and is downloadable). The stuff you saw in my message will
not work.

If possible, go back to the computer that made the backups. You can copy the
files MSB*.* from the DOS directory there. They will fit on one floppy.

Please explain how the backups were made, what version of MS-DOS was in use, and
what you're doing to restore in much more detail.

This whole thing is such a mess between versions of backups and whether 6.20
or 6.22 etc. etc. I'll just turn the darned floppies over to the IRS and let
them figure it out. Our tax dollars at work!
Thank you for all your help though. I really appreciate it!

I like that.
