How to install fonts (.fon)

What's the proper way to install fonts stored in .fon files? I'm not clear
on how to use the AddFontResource() and RemoveFontResource() methods. When
you specify a file name, do you specify a name to a file in the fonts
directory? Or can you specify the name of a local file? Do you have to
restart the system after installing the font? Is there something I'm
supposed to add to the registry?

Any comments, suggestions, or ideas would be appreciated.
