I uninstalled DX SDK Aug 2007, turned off my AVG antivirus and tried to
install the latest version but it give me an error at the end.
"There is a problem preventing your installation from continuing. Please
take the following action required and try setup again."
"Setup has not completed. In order to use the Microsoft DirectX SDK (June
2008 ), you must reinstall later."
"Error code: S1010"
WTF!!??
Who thought up that one?
No mention of the error code at Microsoft either that I could find.
I've rebooted and cleaned the registry without any success.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?
I'm currently downloading (at a snail's pace) the August 2007 SDK hoping
that it wont give me the same error otherwise I will have real problems.
I'm afraid that uninstalling the SDK may have corrupted something.

Thanks Chuck, but I deleted them and reinstalled August 2007 so I could
continue working.
If I try it again I will save them, but I will probably wait for the next
version.
I much appreciate your offer to look at the logs.
Cheers.

I'll try that I guess...

Yes, I saw that you had a problem too and I wondered if you fixed it.
I will be waiting for the August SDK too and have a little fear in my gut
that I will download it for 4 hours just to get the same problem.
But I am a pessimist at heart I guess.
Cheers

FYI,
Just installed the August SDK without a hitch.

I had the same exact error for both the June 2008 and August 2008 install.
XP Pro SP3, using VS Express 2008. (I have an old license for VS 2005 Pro,
but didn't install it after the last time I installed).
Any thoughts here?
I had Steam running, and Steam uses DirectSound. This would cause the
runtime installation to fail.
I thought Windows had a method for installing system DLLs that were
currently in use (by basically replacing them on the next reboot).
It would seem the DxSDK doesn't use this functionaly.
Thanks,
McJohn

DirectX_SDK.log has this one line:
10/22/08 00:27:38: DXSDKSetup: CLR version number = 2.0.50727
What's gone wrong here?
P4
Windows XP Home
SP 3
Motherboard ASUS P4P800-VM
Intel 865G graphics chipset
Try updating Winrar..
The following has worked for me:
Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Find the "Windows Audio" service
Select -> Right-click -> Properties
Stop the service
Set "Startup type: Manual"
Save (OK)
Restart the computer
Disable anti-virus
Install DirectX SDK - it should install now successfully.
Set the "Windows Audio" service's "Service type" to "Automatic"
Restart the computer
Enable anti-virus
I hope this works for everyone.

That explains that this code S1010 does imply a general problem, which may
range from conflicting dlls to corrupt files.
After trying everything I'm re downloading the march 2009 update.
