wireless connects but the local area connection does not

I have a friend who has a laptop but cannot use a wireless network because
though it says that the wireless is connected the localarea connection is
not. It is really strange because on this network there are many computers
that have the same problem but there are some that connect without a hitch.
HELP PLEASE!!!!!
