DX3 vs. DX8 vs. DX11

Hello, I am new to your group. I'm Cal.

Years ago, for fun, I wrote a DirectX "movie maker" app.
It is DX3, Visual Studio 6. It consists of a C++ OCX, and a VB6 frontend.

Recently, I have "upgraded" to DX8, still with VB6; because I remembered that the SDK samples had that animated robot program using skmech.x. So far, so good...

Except... the DX3 version would correctly display models that did not contain normals. DX8 does not. I tried ComputeNormals but no luck.
