I think I have a defective PC or BIOS or something, because my USB
stick frequently drops offline during use.

Now, I admit I bought my system at a place called Tony's Pizza 'N PCs;
it only has USB-1; and its motherboard undoubtedly flew back to the US
with Nixon after his first visit to China.

Anyway, when my USB stick goes south, I simply double-click on that
handy System Tray icon comprising a green arrow and some little gray
object beneath it. (I can't make out what the hell it is. Probably the
pictograph for Long Live Chairman Mao).

I can then dismount the stick in software, physically detach it, and
stick it into the PC again.

However, on occasion, Windows says the stick "cannot be stopped right
now."

Well, you certainly can't accuse Redmond's propeller heads of being
verbose. Tell you WHY the stick can't be removed? Identify the process
PREVENTING its dismounting? Surely you jest, America.

Everyone knows that on literally thousands of points of UI
communication failure, Windows is the operating system of choice of
the discerning Etruscan.

Would someone *please* tell me that in newer versions of Windows, the
error message IDENTIFIES the process keeping the USB from being
removed? Or suggests what to do about it?

If not, I say to Microflot: I do not upgrade Windows, because I do not
throw good money after bad.
