Sorry if this is an obvious one but I am trying to find out the
GUID/UUID for our Dell desktops in preparation for a RIS roll out to
Windows 2000 Pro using pre-staged accounts.
I have gone into the BIOS and the only number I have been able to find
is the System tag which is only 5 charachters.
Is it the MAC address on the network card and if so how would I
correctly set out the GUID from a MAC address of 00-B0-D0-32-5F-76
An example of one of the system tags is jvuje
Thanks in advance for any help given

The GUID is a 32 character alphanumeric address, which can be hard to
come by. On computers that are PC98 compliant the GUID can be found
in the BIOS. In addition, the manufacturer may put the GUID on a
sticker located inside or outside of the computer, or provide a
spreadsheet, or a script with
the GUIDs for the computers that were purchased. Another method for
finding the elusive GUID is to use a network sniffer to capture the
DHCP discover packet of the client. These are all typical ways to get
the GUID. However, most of them don't work! A little known factoid is
the MAC address of the clients network adapter can be used as the
GUID. The MAC address of the network adapter can be
entered into the GUID field and padded with zeros to fill in the
remaining 32 characters needed for the GUID. The zeros must be
entered before the MAC Address.

Another option is to contact Dell directly. They should be able to
provide you with the GUID.

Thank you very much for the response.
The MAC address thing will come in very useful for the few systems we
have that are not from Dell.
I took your advise and contacted Dell. They emailed me a utility that,
when run on a Dell PC, will reveal the UUID. They said it is
unsupported, but it works. Does not work on non Dell systems but then
I never expected it to.
If I have this UUID would I be better off using it or the MAC address
as you suggested (e.g. MAC GUID=0000000000000000000000B0D0325F76)?
Incidently if I use the MAC GUID, is this used in Active Directory to
identify the computer object?
If so what would happen to the system in AD if I changed the NIC? I am
guessing nothing.
Personally I prefer the idea of using the MAC GUID as it I feel more
confident that I am using a definite thing (plenty of ways of finding
and confirming a MAC: ipconfig, sniffers, etc.). Not finding the Dell
UUID anywhere else gives me a little cause for concern, especially as
it does not seem to relate to the system tag or serial number or
anything else, from what I can tell. However I'll still try it to see
if it works.
Once again, thanks very much.
