My Windows 2000 computer has annoyed me for years with a built in
Ethernet controller. When it boots, it always asks for a driver (New
Hardware). Every time I cancel the request. I dont use ethernet or want
it, but I dont know how to disable it. I've gone into the settings on
control panel and supposedly disabled it, but it comes right back to
annoy me at the next bootup.

Unfortunately I am not exactly sure what this computer is anymore. I
know it's MB is an IBM, with a 1000mhz coppermine Intel Celeron CPU
(Using CPU-ID). Over the years I've moved the innards ro another case,
and upgraded darn near everything, so not knowing the actual name of the
computer, I am not sure how to find the driver online. CPU-ID has more
info about the MB, but what info do I need? It does say Model 6341K6U.
Could that be the actual model of the computer? Or is that the model of
the MB?

I also have Win98se on this same computer, (dual boot) which does not
annoy me about that driver. Can I steal the driver from Win98 and
install it in 2000?

-OR-

Is there a way to completely disable the ethernet in the computer's
Bios? If so, where do I look for that setting?

I've had to cancel this annoyance for years, and really want to stop it.

Thanks in advance.

*I crossposted to the XP newsgroup because the 2000 group appears dead.

If you don't need the device, it can more than likely be disabled on the
BIOS

The other thing to do is NOT to cancel the installation, just let it go
ahead. When it gets to the part about installing the driver there should
be an option not to see that message again

Just guessing, but could this be generated by one of the lines listed
in the 2nd or 3rd (or 3rd or 4th) tab of msconfig?

I once found all those lines in a file or two, but dont' remember
where. Anyhow, msconfig is designed for disabling such lines.
