Hi all,

I have 2 PCs, 1 is Win2K, the other is Win98 and they are networked
together. The Win2K connects to broadband inernet. I want to share the
internet, how do i do that ??
I've been "lurking" around this newsgroup for several days ....reading posts
from the masters ... and i'm kinda confused. What's the best way to share
internet :
- built-in ISC from Win2k (i tried but it didnt work !)
- RRAS with NAT (what the hell is that ? and how to ?)
- or buy a damn router (man, i'm a college student, where do i
find the damn money ! )
I'm very close to tear this %^$&^ PCs apart !
I hope you can show me some solutions . Thank you very much.

All three solutions are valid. The router is the most robust and hassle
free, it can also provide a degree of security to your PC's because it can
hide them behind NAT.

ICS is really easy to setup - where did you run into problems?

Get a router. Don't bother with ICS, it stinks, and that's me being
extremely diplomatic. Pick up a cheap and cheerful NetGear or something with
stateful inspection and you'll be much happier. Look on ebay or something if
you're trying to save money. I was a college student once; you guys don't
spend much money on haute cuisine, so perhaps you can scrape together the
money from your food budget! ;-)

Well you can go cheap with a hub (just plug and go)
or buy a router and config it

How is a hub going to help?

Is he is going to shell out cash then buy a router, to keep it cheap use a
crossover cable and ICS or RRAS, there is no need for a hub.

As Brendon mentioned above, if you want to plug two
computers together directly, you need to get a cross over
cable.

With that, ICS should work fine.

The real draw back to this solution is that the win 2k
machine has to be on for the win 98 machine to access the
internet. Not a problem if it is on all the time. It
can be a bit of a hassle though if say you use the win 2k
machine and your roomate uses the win 98 machine. Then
he has to boot the win 2k machine first then boot the win
98 machine.
