Hi,

We just added a couple of Win 98 computers to our cafe (were trying to
become an 'internet' cafe), and even though they are mostly
under our watchful eye, we wanted to "lock" em down, like the computers at
libraries typically are.

What are the various methods available to do this ?

I know this is more difficult with 98, and we are not looking for anything
foolproof, just as good as we can get.

I seem to remember system policy being able to do this ?

It is not possible to run group policy on Windows 98 , correct ?
So system policy is our only choice probably ?

How about any 3rd party tools ?

We would like to basically restrict the start menu, prevent ctrl-alt-del
seqence, prevent running dos, etc ...

You want one of the microsoft.public.win98.* groups. This group is for
Windows 2000-related issues.

Cheers

This is the way to go for Win9x. Win98 does have a policy editor,
though it is rather easy for the user to bypass, once he has access.
Do a search on "SecurDesk," which has the restrictions you mentioned.
There may be other 3rd party similar.

You really can not lock down a Windows 98 computer. Yes you can use
poledit and system policy, but with lack of ntfs file system it will not
take long for someone to do something to disrupt things, and believe me in a
public place there are those who live to disrupt computers. Third part tools
are a possibility, but if it was me I would use that money toward purchasing
XP Pro. You can really lock down XP Pro, especially with its Software
Restriction Policies. --- Steve

Simple answer: don't use Win9x/ME. It is not secure, cannot be made to be
secure. Well, you can kindasorta do stuff via policies, but a clever ten
year old could rip through that like tissue paper. Use a secure OS like
2k/XP, and look into running in kiosk mode so people can't get to anything
except IE.
