When attempting to open an image with "Microsoft Photo
Editor" I get the error "No file format can be found in
the registry" Is there a fix - or a SIMPLY registry edit?
(I'm not adept at all in reg edits) Thank you!! David

Ummm...what's the file extension of the image file you're
trying to open?

Photo Editor, in my experience, always breaks. Often
times, removing the
key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Photo Editor"
and allowing for it to rebuild once you launch the
application again. If you don't believe me that it will,
export the key first to a reg file and then delete it.
Otherwise, try reinstalling the office suite. It may not
be a bad idea to download eraser2k (assuming you're using
office 2000) and have it supplement the regular add\remove
of office 2000. If not, try to perform a repair
installation to see if that resolves it. However, keep in
mind that if the problem is registry related, the repairs
and regular uninstall does not usually remove enough fo
the registry keys so manually removing keys may be
necessary.

Google on "No file format can be found in the registry":

Subject: Invalid file format in Photo Editor

Q: I am installing windows 2000 via RIS and deploying office 2000 with a
transform through GPO in AD. Running Photo Editor as administrator to the
PC works fine, but when running Photo Editor as a regular user I get the
following error:

No file format can be found in the registry!

Thanks

A: Hi Remko,
In the file associations for .DOC and .XLS files in Windows Explorer see
if the box for [x] Confirm Open after Download is checked in the Edit menu.
That may adjust it for folks who doubleclick on a link, but if they right
click then can download it from the link.

Hi David,

A search of the Microsoft Knowledge Base for your exact error message returns article 260151 titled: "OFF2000: "No File Format
Information Can Be Found in the Registry" Message When You Start Photo Editor". In sum the article says:

1. "Microsoft Photo Editor is a minor auxiliary application that does not meet the requirements of the Windows 2000 Logo
compliant program"
2. The program is "trying to access registry keys that require permissions that your account does not have"
3. The workaround is to give "Users" Full Control of this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools

For the entire contents of the article, search for it at the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
