To fix the information for Win2K, you can use Start > Run >
Regedit.exe to edit:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner
&
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization
How this will affect the names displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some
read the registered owner information dynamically, while others read
it only during installation.
About which version of Office are you asking? It makes a
difference.
Office 95, if I remember correctly, required the user to manually
enter the information at the time of installation, and then
"permanently" embedded that information into its splash screens, etc.
The only way to change it is to completely remove and then reinstall
Office 95.
Office 97 reads the above specified RegisteredOwner and
RegisteredOrganization registry values only during installation, and
then "permanently" embeds that information into its splash screens,
etc. The only way to change it is to completely remove and then
reinstall Office 97.
In Office 2000, however, one need only open any of the Office
applications and click Tools > Options > User Information, and edit
the user information there. The company information still comes from
the RegisteredOrganization key, but is dynamic - it should read the
new value from the registry.
In Office XP, the currently logged in user name is applied unless
changed within the Office application as in Office 2K above, and the
company name also still comes from the registry.
Mind you, this is all off the top of my head, as I'm not running
the 3 different versions of Office here at home, and I only have
enough knowledge of Office for day-to-day use. I'm not an advanced,
much less an expert, user. For a more definitive answer, you really
should post your question in one or more of the news groups dedicated
to Office issues. It may well be that doing a simple find & replace
in the registry will solve your dilemma.
