I am confused on protocol numbers. If i want to establish say a VPN conn usin
PPTP well i know I need 1723 port open but I also need 47 (GRE) protocol, what
confuses me here is do I make sure port 47 is open or is there something
different that I need to do to make sure protocol 47 is being allowed through?
Another example is Ipsec requires protocols 50/51 and port 500(IKE) do i just
open up ports 50, 51 and 500 on router and then ipsec traffic is allowed through?

Ports and protocols are completely different things.
For PPTP you need TCP port 1723 open so that the PPTP packets can pass
through. You also need to have IP protocol 47 (GRE) enabled because the
packet has a GRE header attached.
