Does the server end need to be a Server OS or can I get
RRAS for W2KPro, or WXP Pro? Thanks.

I'd like to enable a remote machine to securely access a
local machine using VPN over internet. Remote is DSL,
local is cable. I'd like a client OS on the local machine
to avoid having to add a server just to manage VPN. Can a
client OS (e.g. W2K or WXP pro) host VPN & how?
Second question:
How does this landscape change if two remote machines
want to access the local one simultaneously (i.e. does
the client OS permit multiple connections)?
Third (and hopefully final) question:
If a remote machine wants to access more than one machine
on the local network, does each have to host VPN
connections, or can the remote machine be given access to
the local network as a whole?
Thanks,
Eric

if you want to set up a VPN connection between only 2 machines you can run
only windows 2000 PRO on both on the machine you are calling you need to
create a new network connection and enable " accept incoming connection"
option in the wizard
but if you want multiple connection to the same server at the same time, (
you need in this case an OS that manages the connection) so the called
machine needs to be running windows 2000 server or windows 2003 server and
install RRAS)
