Dear all,

I'm scratching my head over this one....

We have 2 Active Directory domain controllers which are in a child domain of
a forest called Root. These DC's are 001 and 002. Having decommissioned
our NT servers and user accounts and got everyone working well in Windows
2000, I decided to take the plunge and switch over to Win2K Native Mode.

On the same day (prior to beginning Exchange 2000 investigation work on aW2K
member server 003) I performed a full restore of DC 002 and DC 003 just to
verify that if Exchange 2000 did something drastic to our set-up I could
restore both the exchange server (003) and one of the domain controllers
(002).

Since that day, our remote users accessing our DC through a RAS server in
another domain in the forest keep getting this error message:

"Error 930: Authentication server did not respond to authentication request
in a timely manner"

To fix this I've tried:

1) For each remote user I've checked the user accounts to see that they
still have "Allow Access" checked under the Dial-in tab. They do.
2) Rebooting both Domain controllers.
3) Asked the IT dept responsible for the RAS server to check things their
end (they rebooted and verify that other users in other domains are
authenticating normallyu via RAS)
4) Tried creating new test users with dial-in permissions and dialling up to
find the same problem.
5) Checking default domain, and user group specific group policy.
6) Checked client DUN settings (everyone uses W2K Pro)

All these fail to get to get to the bottom of this problem. Gah!

Looking on the MS KB I found this article that refers to RAS and IAS.

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q299/6/84.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=g
n&FR=0&qry=Q299684&rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WIN2000

Our guys looking after the RAS service assure me that we are not using
RADIUS so it's not applicable.

Can anyone please help with this toughie?

Thanks in advance
