Hi all,

I'm trying to setup a RRAS VPN Server with W2K Server at home using my
Cable modem. I have a Linksys 8 port Cable/DSL router at home. I'm
trying to forward VPN traffic to my W2K box on the network to
authenticate users on the outside. I'm able to allow the TCP 1723
traffic in, but unable to allow the GRE 47 access because GRE is not
supported.

Has anyone made this work with the Linksys Cable/DSL routers? I'm
trying to have to avoid buying a new router that has this VPN support
if at all possible. Could I use L2TP instead and authenticate users
that way instead of PPTP?

I'm sure you all see my dilemna. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Please email responses to: wick...@austin.rr.com

Thanks,
Eric

My only suggestion would be to use the Linksys router just as a hub (If you
can), install a second network card in the server, an use Win2k Server's NAT
capabilities for internet access and then use it for VPN.....

That way he'd need another DSL modem too.

On some Linksys routers there is a VPN pass-through mode setting. This
enables GRE.

Not that I have gotten mine to work outside of the
attbroadband network, but my BEFSR41 (4 port router) does
have the GRE support, you just need to go the advanced
tab, then the filters tab, and ENABLE PPTP forwarding.
That should allow GRE to pass through the router. I know
that this was not in the very first firmware release, but
if you update to the newest you should be able to do this.

Hope this helps.
