Running WIN 2000 Pro on HP notebook and same on desk top
computers. Have connected fast parallel cable to parallel
ports on both computers. Have tried everything in the book
to get them connected including pay (so far) $50 to
Microsoft Tech24 to get help and they can't figure it out
either. Does anyone know what all the setting should be to
accomplish this. Really need help !

Frank,
I have a business associate who uses a special version of
the cable that goes into the LAN port (like a telephone
connector only larger) on each machine.
They call it a null cable - the wires are connected
differently than a regular LAN Cat 5 cable.
You then run add a new connection in the network and dial-
up and select a direct computer to computer connection.
You have to have a special cable, not the regular cable.

If both computers have network cards, get a crossover Ethernet cable (*not*
the more common straight-thru) and plug each end into each NIC. Or get two
straight-throughs and a hub/switch.

Hey "Lanwench", thanks for the suggestion about using a
cross over ethernet cable. Question. Once you hook up the
cable to both ports, are there any other settings that you
have to make, like some proptocol other than TCP/IP ? and
Do you go through the same thing by clicking on or using
the IE icon ?

Nothing special needs to happen other than configuring TCP/IP properly on
each computer's network connection and making sure they're in the same
workgroup - and set up each login name/password identically on the both
computers.

Also there are requirement and proceedures listed in Windows 2000 help under
"direct cable connection"
