I'm trying to network a Windows 2000 & Windows 98SE box. In my windows 2000
computer, I have 2 nics (one for cable modem, and one going to the hub for
the network).

My cable works fine, however, I can't get the network going. On the Win98SE
box I'm using TCP/IP with 'obtain IP address automatically.' I used the
networking wizard as a last resort. In network neighborhood I can see the
win98 box but not the win2000 box. I have obtain IP addy auto & obtain DNS
auto as well... in my network neighborhood on the 2000 box I see the 2000
box but not the 98se box?

What am I doing wrong? Anyhelp would be appreciated

On the Win2k box at a command prompt type : ipconfig/all
capture the result and past it to a text file.

in win98 at a command prompt type winipcfg

for all interfaces make note of:

1 IP address
2 Gateway
3 Subnet mask

Send me all of the above and I'll take a look at it.

Hi there,

not too sure if this is the correct answer (let me apologise first if it's
wrong) First of all, is there a DHCP set up? this will then distribute IP
address to the other machines (win98). Then afterwhich you need to set the
default gateway (when setting up your DHCP) to 10.80.48.1.

however to take note that, in win2k, you are require to setup a DNS together
with DHCP.

Just to buttress spanky point with 2k dns+dhcp settings. When it happened to me,
I have to disabled the dns/dhcp at first and accept the ICS default dhcp with
192.168.0.1. Your workgroup name, i believe should be the same name - for U to
see the other pc % network. can you ping each other?

Hi,

My sugesstion may or may not help u but one thing is sure :

The subnet mask u have used is WRONG. U are using an A class address
(10.80.48.1). The default subnet mask for this class is 255.0.0.0 and NOT
255.255.0.0 or 255.255.255.0. Unless ofcourse u are using SUPERNETTING,
which doesn't seem to be the case.

A Class : 255.0.0.0 (IP Addresses from 0.0.0.0 to 127.255.255.255)
B Class : 255.255.0.0 (IP Addresses from 128.0.0.0 to 191.255.255.255)
C Class : 255.255.255.0 (IP Addresses from 192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.255)

So u should choose the subnet mask appropriately.

Secondly, try using NETBEUI and just see if the mc/s can talk to each other
and the go about using/installing TCP/IP because
NETBEUI is very easy to setup (u just have to install it thats all). This
way u will know if the physical connectivity is OK.

regards,

--Chaitanya

Thanks great lesson on Subnets, I'll change them accordingly. I tried
netBUI but still no connection. My cables and hub are both good. I'll see
if changing the subnet mask works.

thanks,
