Chapter numbering

Hi There: I am trying to add chapter numbers to my thesis. Now, I created a table of contents and therefore, add Heading 1 to all the title of each section. So, when I add chapter numbering add chapter number to sectons like table of contents. Now I would like to start adding chapter numbers in section 4, starting as chapter 1, but in outlined numbering, the option that allows you to start in the section that you want is not on. I already went through the whole styling issues but certainly I still don't get it.
