First, Windows Server 2003 is using a very outdated version of the AFP
protocol. Version 2.x supports about 65,000 files per volume. When a
server crashes the index can get corrupted and the server must rebuild
it. The speed of the rebuild is dependent on your hardware. A few hours
to rebuild an index isn't unusual.
Bear in mind that Services for Macintosh in Windows Server 2003 is the
last version and will not be included in future versions of Windows Server.
I suggest you consider looking into either a better SMB client for Mac
OS X such as Dave from <http://www.thursby.com> or a better AFP 3.x
compliant server such as ExtremeZ-IP from <http://www.grouplogic.com>.
Hope this helps!
