You should be able to see these icons in the Start Menu\Programs folder
under the effected users profile in Documents and Settings.
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Start Menu\Programs.
If this is a place that you have already checked, the following information
may assist you further:
To start off you MUST Insure the icons are not comming from somewhere else.
Usual
locations are:
- C:\Documents and Settings\Default User or C:\Winnt\Profiles\Default User
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users or C:\Winnt\Profiles\All Users
- LogonServer\Netlogon\Default User (if the user is logging into a domain)
- a Roaming/Mandatory Profile (if the user is logging into a domain)
Once those are verified, proceed to the steps below:
To prevent the system from creating the Internet Explorer icons set the
following
key to "0" (or a blank value):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}\StubPath
To prevent the system from creating the Outlook Express icons set the
following key
to "0" (or a blank value):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}\StubPath
To prevent the system from creating the Outlook Address Book icons set the
following key to "0" (or a blank value):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{7790769C-0471-11d2-AF11-00C04FA35D02}\StubPath
The above do not include removal of the Internet Explorer Desktop Icon which
can be
removed by a group policy. To prevent the Internet Explorer Desktop icon
from
showing:
- Open gpedit.msc (Local Security Policy)
- Follow down to the path: User
Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Desktop
- Enable the "Hide Internet Explorer icon on desktop" Policy
