If either of
Autocad 2000
Proe 2001
are up and running and any of (All Office XP)
Microsoft Powerpoint
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Visio
are started or brought to the foreground, I get a blue
screen STOP 0x50 page fault in nonpaged area
0xE3D88A14,0x01,0xA0114226,0x01, in win32k.sys
It also does it with Microsoft Excel when I try to edit
the color of a chart series.
We've run chkdsk.
We've reinstalled Office.
We've thoroughly checked all hardware, including
exhaustive checks of all memory.
We've moved the paging file.
We got rid of the Logitech mouse and put in a Microsoft
one, just to see.
I ran a checksum on my win32k.sys (October 21, 2002,
1,643,248 bytes) and found that it matched other similar
computers in the area that run the same software and have
no problems.
The only thing left is to reinstall Win2k, but that's
going to cost me a day of work, and I don't have much hope
that it will really fix the problem.
Anybody have any suggestions? Even things involving
exorcists and chicken bones will be seriously considered.
Yikes. You've done so many things it's hard to say exactly what is causing
the problems. Your best bet is to *completely* wipe clean the HD and start
from scratch. Dont bother with Windows reinstalling or upgrading, just
perform a *fresh* installation of Win2k or WinXP.
Something else you could have done when the errors with the CAD software
began occurring---did you contact their tech support and ask what could have
been causing the errors?
I know that A-CAD charges for phone support but I also know they've got a
fairly comprehensive web site with a good knowledge base. Had you searched
it I'm sure you would have found something. It may have even been that
you needed the latest service pack in order to go from NT 4.0 to Win2k.
Curious. Did you have SP6 for NT installed when you did the Win2k upgrade?
No matter. It's moot now. Just format the HD and start from scratch,
unless of course, you have someone available to sit around and troubleshoot
trying to fix the problems that you don't know how to.
Good luck.
Good luck.
Have you service packed (or re service packed) Windows 2000 to the latest SP (SP3)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp3/default.asp
http://www.ntcompatible.com/faq231-2.shtml
Have you service packed Office XP (I believe its up to SP2)
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/journ/Oxpsp2a.htm
possible pointers
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;281132
also check if your machine uses a VIA chipset and update the 4in1 drivers for it if it does.

Oh, yes, forgot to mention that. Win2k has service pack 3
and Office has service pack 2. The Microsoft knowledge
base article mentions a problem like this that should have
already been fixed. My win32k.sys is dated 10/21/02, an
MS says the 5/31/01 version should be good.
I'll look into the chipset issue. Thanks.
Actually, we did. Our IT department reformats the disk
and installs the new operating system from scratch.
It's not the CAD applications themselves that are crashing
the system, it's Microsoft Office, so I'm not inclined to
blame the problem on the CAD apps.
But your reply got me thinking, What's in common between
Autocad and Proe? Turns out, high end graphics. I tried
Patran, and MS Office applications crash the system with
it running, too. So there we have CAD applications from
three different vendors, and Office will crash the system
in the presence of any of them.
So I tried the simplest possible fix, disabling graphics
accelerations. And it worked! These CAD applications are
very finicky about their graphics drivers, so I haven't
played around with them yet, but I'm slowly pushing the
accelerations back up until I find the crashes again.
That's a solution that's not in the Knowledge Base, but
probably needs to be.
Thanks for the intellectual stimulation.
