Hi, we are soon to be upgrading our NT4 domain to Win2k
AD, but recently we had a company name change and our IT
boss wants the Domain name changed first to our new
company name. Currently our NT 4 name ends in co.uk, why
I'm not sure as there was no need to have this on the
end. What I need to know is, is this domain name a
netbios name, does it really need to be changed or will it
create problems on the upgrade. What I really want to
know is, when dcpromo is run on the PDC will the forest we
create be based on this NT 4.0 domain name (name.co.uk)
or can we name our forest DNS name there when the dcpromo
is run?

Kind regards

Andy

You can actually name the upgraded domain whatever you want. See this
technet article for all the steps you should follow as part of the process:

Name your domain something like companyname.local
The reason for this is you will have no problems with
internet DNS and also it is what microsoft actually
recomend you do. If you call your domain
companyname.co.uk then you need to know a lot about DNS
etc to browse your internet browser to your hosted .co.uk
web space and changing the server DNS settings.
