I have two PCs, (one Dell GX-150 and one HP VL600)both
running Windows 2000 SP3 and Office XP SP2 w/all
applicable Windows and Office Updates.

When Windows explorer is launched, the folder area on the
left is gray. Clicking and unclicking the folder button
doesn't help.

I have restored all default settings for the View Options,
but no luck. This occurs no matter who is logged onto the
PC, so I don't believe it's a profile issue.

I found a solution on Microsoft's support site to display
items in the Right pane of Explorer, but nothing for the
LEFT pane.

Please help!

Check the following registry key it should contain the following :

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer

"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
"InProcServer32"="C:\\Winnt\\System32\\shdocvw.dll"

The InProcServer32 key contained strange characters on my system
This solved it for me.
