I would appreciate any opinions as to the best CD recording software to be
used only for backup purposes under Win2K pro. Thanks

Im not sure what the software itself is called, but I got a Phillips CD-R
and have had no problems with the software that came with it. Also I have a
friend usess Easy CD - Creator (I think that is the name) he has no
problems with it in Win2000 either.

Don't use Easy CD: it installs it's own CD drive access dlls and doesn't
remove them when you uninstall it.
Nero is excellent. Use 5.5 over 5.0 or any previous version any day. Nero
has considerably more features than Easy CD.
CDRWin has a shareware version that allow you to make bootable ISOs etc, so
used in conjuction with Nero, there's nothing you can't do. The shareware
version will also burn at 1x only. The registration isn't very much tho'
(relatively) and much less than Easy CD.
Win XP Pro (certainly, maybe even home, but home's evil) will have/has
native CD burning capabilities, and so when you start using XP that may be
the easiest way of doing it.
Don't use packet writing, as it's not very reliable; do it the proper way.

Just my few witchit beads.

Hi Len,

My Dell computer came with Roxio's Direct CD and Create CD. I don't know if
they are the best, but they sure do the job. By the way, Roxio is the former
Adaptec
Just make sure before using them to go to Roxio's website and download the
latest version. Earlier versions may not work with Win2k or with your backup
software.
Good luck with your backups, Dan

We'll see. Remember that it's still in a beta stage and so that may have
been a bug in the version you were using. We'll tell soon enough.

However, if MS do stop people writing software for the windows platfrom
then, they will be in serious trouble from the DoJ, and I don't see how they
can then justify that. BTW, where did the last one go?

If you're into backup only, try Retrospect Express from www.dantz.com. It
works with every imaginable CD-RW drive and requires no other drivers
whatsoever (eg directcd, other packetwriting stuff...). I use it for several
months and I am very happy with it.

4.02 had some known bugs which were fixed in 4.03 (or maybe even 4.02a).
OTOH, ECD 5 is reported to be fairly stable with no *reliably* reported
problems.
