Mail Service in Windows 2000 Server ?

My company is planning to install Windows 2000 server, We have a setup to
share off a windows 98 computer and use microsoft mail/postoffice for
internal use only. I setup an XP pro computer for a new server but unknown
to us it was limited to10 users and it doesn't support microsoft mail. Is
there a service in 2000 server that will handle simple emails on our lan, or
do we need buy some expensive program like exchange. I have minimum
experience with 2000 and none with 2000 server.

windows has smtp but no pop server, thus you'll have to find something --
there are several decent pop3 servers available for free, though.
