I am using Windows 2000 Professional. Today, for the
first time that I have noticed there has been a lot of
disk accessing. It appears to be explore.exe doing it. I
have tried stopping all applications, disabling virus
checking, disabling firewall, disconnecting the LAN and it
still continues.

On startup this morning it it took 20 - 30 minutes before
I could get an application to run.

It also comes in phases. After start up, I figured that
things had settled down, but 2 - 3 times since, the disk
rattles away for 10-15 minutes.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what is happening?

Thanks,

Richard

Probably the Indexing Service.
Goto Administrative Tools-->Services and find the Indexing Service.
Stop the service and then set it to Manual.

Ron,

Thank you for the quick response and explicit suggestion.
This has fixed the problem.
