I sent a fax and got the following messages from the resulting fax
monitor:

12:25:41 PM Idle
12:30:05 PM Dialing XXX-XXX-XXXX
12:30:15 PM No Answer
12:34:03 PM Idle

Then nothing happened for the longest time. I tried to find a
checkbox somehwere (anywhere) that let me hear on the built-in
speakers what is happening on the telephone line, but there doesn't
seem such a capability.

I paused the queue, paused the job, unplugged the phone line from the
computer, and plugged it into a real phone. I immediately realized
that the rapid beeping dial tone indicating voicemail was confusing
the modem. After taking the voicemail and returning the dial tone to
normal, I plugged it into the computer again. I could not resume the
fax queue nor the specific job (the buttons were grayed out). After
much putzing around, I refreshed queue, then found out I could resume
the queue and the "print" job. Nothing happened again, for the
longest time. I cancelled all jobs, and reprinted the document to
the fax printer. All it did was sit in the queue. The fax monitor
did not change.

Is it normal for the fax to go dead like this? Is there a way to get
it working again?

Is there a way to listen to the phone line using the built-in
speakers?

Luving Mr. Gates even more,

A.

I'm going to assume the modem hung when it encountered the voicemail tone.
At this point, the modem will probably have to be re-initialized (by a
restart or reboot). For grins, you might go to 'Control Panel|Phone and
Modem Options' and see if the modem responds normally to a diagnostics
query. Thee modem's speaker volume (to allow you to hear the connect tones
is on the "Modem" tab right next to the Diagnostic tab.

If I invoke the control panel and choose Phone and Modem Options, the
dialogue box has 3 tabs:
* Dialing Rules
* Modems
* Advanced

Under the Modems tab s a window with a list of modems, containing one
modem "3COM 56K V.90 Mini PCI Modem" attached to COM3. The Add/Remove/
Properties buttons are grayed out. If I log in as admin, they are not
grayed out, and the Properties button brings up a dialogue box with 3
tabs:
* General
* Diagnostics
* Advanced

The General tab has the speaker volume set at two thirds. so it seems
like the speaker should be activated. No other tabs contain anything
that appears applicable.

Have you run "query modem" on the Diagnostics tab and does that look normal?

I clicked "Query Modem", and got a whack of (presumably) diagnostic
messages. I have to admit that the meaning of it isn't clear. I
can't highlight it for copying. Is there something specific I should
look at?
