Hi all,

I have a Forest and 2 child domains. The Forest has a DNS and the
child domains have a DNS also. I have tried to add deligations for
the child domains. The problem is the the Start of Authority Serial
number for the Forest is over 1600, but the child domains are only at
60 and 75. I cannot ping via name for some of the servers.

The child domains are not updating correctly it seems.

Should the child domains be only looking at the root DNS as the Name
servers?

Thanks
Tim

In news:6f52e072.03051...@posting.google.com,
TimD <timd...@comcast.net> posted his concerns then I replied down below:

If you delegate a child zone to the child's DNS server, then all child
clients and DCs should only use the child's DNS server. If you also use the
parent's, then you can get a resolution or "forwarding" loop issue, since
the delegation at the parent will send queries for the child to the child's
DNS server. If this went from a child client, you can see what I mean. Not
good practice.

If they aren;t updating, make sure the child clients and DCs are only
pointing to the child;s DNS and make sure dynamic updates are set to Yes and
the zone name in the child is spelled correctly, such as: child.domain.com.

For Internet resolution, I would suggest individual forwarding to an
external server and not to "each other", in case you may have that set as
such.
