If you are not supporting AD on that server you should have no problems
using a backlevel BIND secondary, but use the BIND Secondaries option
until you establish how backlevel they are (in dns server properties, options).
If supporting AD, consider rebuilding the one server with name like ad.pub.local
for internal use and pub.com for public use primary for BIND transfer.
If intent on second non-w2k dns for a windows box keep looking, very narrow
choices in free/share/commercial for nt4 or w2k indicate win9x a long search.
Hence , check into *nix and BIND.
HTH

My ISP (Telstra) has DNS servers that don't support the SRV records.  Hence when I tried to set up my Win2k server as the primary DNS server, and use my ISPs as a secondary, zone transfers are not sucessfull.  The ISP has no plans to upgrade their DNS servers to BIND 8.1.2

One workaround I want to implement is to move to running 2 DNS servers - both primary and secondary.  I only have one Win2k server, and don't want to buy a new one just to act as a DNS server.  Instead, I want to run a DNS server on a Windows client - preferably a Windows 95 client.

I have looked on the internet for software to do this, and can't find any that run BIND 8.1.2 or later.  DeEnesse is only Bind 4

Does anyone know of any DNS server software that will run on a Windows client?

I only have one win2k server, so I am running AD on it. The DNS is
running in Active Directory integrated mode.

Does the BIND secondaries stop SRV records?

What is *nix?

No, SRV records are included in the zone transfer..
The BIND Secondaries option mostly is used for tolerance of
older BIND that is unable to receive batched records during zone
transfers. There are other issues with secondaries on BIND,
that need to be adjusted elsewhere: do not transfer WINS and
WINS-R records, make sure the BIND can do IXFR (incremental
transfer) and use the Notify feature if configured.
The reduced zone transfer performance from BIND Secondaries
option will not have any effect on transfers to W2k secondaries.
