I have a server running Win NT 4 Sp6a and would like to upgrade to Win
2000 Server soon. My current server is running workgroups and I need to
convert it to a Primary Domain Controller in Win NT 4.0 or Win NT 2000.
Can I do it and how, or do I need to start with a new install.

You Can not install NT4 to a pdc.
You can upgrade it to Win2000.
By default all new Win 2000 servers are installed like member servers
in NT4.
After the installation you define if it will be a domain controller or
not.
You do not have pdc's or bdc's in W2K

Windows for WorkGroups cannot be upgraded to Win2K. You must at least get to
Windows 9x.

That wasn't the question. The question was can the workgroup environment be
converted to a Domain when the system is upgraded to W2K or does it have to
be converted before upgrade.

In any case, whether when you install W2K or in NT 4, you will have to
perform a "new" install to make the system a Domain controller.

Thomas,
Your information is incorrect for Windows 2000. The user does not need to
reinstall.
You install Windows 2000 Server. Later on when you want to make it a domain
controller, you run the Active Directory Installation wizard to convert it
to a domain controller. If later on you don't like the AD installation, you
can run the AD wizard again and it will demote the domain controller. No
reinstalls.

I misworded. I meant that Windows 2000 would be a new install (rather than
upgrade) and that the only way to change the NT system to a Domain
Controller in NT 4.0 was a new install.
Am I still wrong? If performing an upgrade installation to Windows 2000
server, you can promote to a DC by running DCPROMO, then?

Thanks for the correction (if I understood)

You are correct about NT4.
Cheers.

Thank you. That was clumsy of me.
