Fax no longer working

Fax worked fine for a while.
Now, for no apparent reason, trying to send a fax results in "Transmission
Error". Event log sais "check cable, etc." but that is all unchanged.
After the failed attempt, the modem is being kept locked until the fax
service is shut down.
