Hi Everyone,

Could someone please advise me where to look for issues concerning
performance, security etc when comparing the two.

I am especially interested in any comments concerning running Site Server
Commerce Edition Vs any other technologies on Unix Web Servers in relation
to creating e-commerce type web sites. I only have a basic understanding of
how CGI works, but have a good understanding of MS based technologies and
architechture.

Also I was wondering if anyone has any stats on the useage of IIS Vs Unix
Web Servers and any trends (I understand that there are mostly Unix Web
Servers out there). Any ideas on why there are so few IIS Web Servers out
there? Is it security reasons, performance, cost, interoperability etc?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

your question cannot be answered in one line

Building ecommerce using PERL with is crazy because you'll have to write too
much.
The same is for writing ASP pages yourself but less crazy because ASP alows
writing less code.

Look for a standard ecommerce ready service like
Cold Fusion, Site Server, or broadvision.

Broadvision is faster on the unix and Cold fusion is faster on NT.

about performance. If you measure the performance stand-alone without
measuring the different sorts of database access and so on IIS is the
fastest and most flexible (in language support).
You should try to find some performance reports if performance is your main
concern.

If you are a beginner then use NT server. There are more Linux/Unix
machines because it is a freely distributed language. However, private
studies by my company (the #2 ISP in Canada) has found that maintenance
costs to run Linux make the whole slate even. It is worth the money to buy
NT server.

As far as performance, NT server handles better, but you will have to tweak
it to get there. Look for my posting titled Re:IIS. Also, NT will require
restarts more often than another operating system.

Last, security wise, NT is not as secure as one could hope, but I would not
worry about anyone hacking your server. If they want to get in (to any
server) they already know how and there is almost nothing you can do.
