I am attempting to use the Private Reserved Domain name method for DNS since
we don't have an Internet presence. For the 1st Tree/Forest, I used the
same DNS Zone name and AD Root Domain name (domain1.local). For the 2nd
Tree, I tried joining the forest by using "domain2.local." I'm really
confused, though, as to setting up the DNS services.

- Should I use one DNS for a forest that has more than one tree, or one DNS
server for each tree? If so, how should I configure DNS for the 1st and 2nd
Tree installs into the same Forest?

The only way I could correctly get the 1st Tree/Forest installed was to let
the AD Wizard create the DNS server itself.....all the correct LDAP and
other records were created, although I had to delete and re-create the PDC's
host record with the PTR checkbox marked. After that, NSLOOKUP and the
Simple DNS query test passed. Even after a correct install, however, I got
the following error messages during boot:

NETLOGON error: "Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS
records failed because no DNS Servers are available" (Event 5781).

"The DNS Server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory.
Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly. The event data
contains the error <0000:00000051>"

During the AD Wizard install on Domain2.local, the wizard suggested again
that I install DNS now (recommended) or on my own. I chose "yes" (now),
because whenever I choose "no" it says that it cannot contact a DNS Server
and, therefore, cannot continue the AD installation.

- This leads me to believe that a DNS Server MUST be installed in each AD
Tree?

I resolved the problem below by ALLOWING DNS dynamic updates to occur. But
now, I'm coming up with the following error message in Event Log:

Event Source: Netlogon
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5781
Description: Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS
records failed because no DNS servers are available.

The Microsoft web site had a fix for this problem under article Q244669, but
it didn't work for me. Their proposed fix was to either 1.) Create a
delegation to the new DNS server on the primary DNS server (I don't
have/need another delegation domain); or 2.) Configure the DNS server's
primary DNS server address with its IP address, or remove the value for the
Primary DNS Server setting so that the computer uses its IP address (tried
this).

I keep coming up with the same error, however.

I have a single machine running Advanced Server (2195). Same problem here.
MS "fixes" don't work either.
Any hints greatly appreciated...
