Current Config:

NT 4.0
We have two noncontigous DNS domains, external and internal namespace are
the same for each.
ISP hosts external hosts on their DNS
We host internal hosts on our DNS behind a proxy

We are upgrading to Win2k.

Question:
1> Should we continue to use same DNS namespace externally and internally?
2>Should we create a new domain for the forest root above the non contigous
internal domains?
3> What should we name our forest root and how does this affect name
resolution?

any help is greatly appreciated.

My approach to this (not necessarily the best one) is this (in answer
to your questions)...

1. We have always had the same internal and external namespaces
so I'd say yes.

2. We had 3 NT4 domains, e.g., DOMAINA, DOMAINB & DOMAINC
all machines in each domain had dns names of the following type...
nts1.domaina.mycompany.com or nts2.domainb.mycompany.com.
I created a new root W2K domain called mycompany.com and the
other 3 are now child domains in the AD structure so, again, my answer
is yes. The machines at root have dns names such as nts3.mycompany.com.

3. Answered above.

Our DNS servers also host both our internal and external namespaces. The
only records hosted by our ISP are for our NS records. If you want to keep
host names separate, use separate DNS servers.
