although it carries the XP brand don't assume it only works for Windows XP,
MOST Microsoft products will work with windows 98 fo at least the next 2
years in my opinion.

Office XP should install and operate successfully on a machine running
Windows 98.

However, the word "run" may be a bit over-optimistic, depending on
just what hardware the Windows 98 machine is running.

If, for example, you have Windows 98 installed on a 486 with 32 mb of
RAM or less then "walk very very slowly" would be a more accurate
choice rather than "run".

It works very well, but if you want to use speech(dictation), it requires
128mb RAM. I used it with less, but it was still beta and a bit buggy.

I used a Celeron 433 with 96mb RAM, then 128MB, then 256. Worked on all 3.
