We have a number of projects in DevStudio and .Net.
We use combinations of VSS 6.0c and 6.0d running on NT/2000/XP.

We have a number of remote users who communicate with the VSS databases on
our office LAN, using VPN over public ADSL. For most, this is painfully
slow. I'd like to hear of any experiences or solutions that others may have,
to make remote access workable.

Apologies for cross-posts.

Visual Source Safe uses plain file sharing which seems to be slow over slow
connections. There are a number of 3rd party solutions around. Check out:

VssConnect http://www.vssconnect.com
Source Offsite http://www.sourceoffsite.com

There are a couple of other but the URLs escape me right now.

How do you define "painfully slow"?

I am part of a development team that uses VSS over VPN exclusively (there is
no office, only a server at a co-location facility). I and my co-workers
use a variety of DSL and Cable providers and the performance is
satisfactory.

One thing to be careful of: since VSS in fileshare-based, your anti-virus
software may be trying to scan for viruses on every access of a file in VSS.
For myself, Norton auto-protect made things about 5x slower than usual
because of the large number of files accessed by the VSS client.

You may want to look into using a product named
SourceOffSite Classic. To learn more about this product,
go to the web site http://www.sourcegear.com

We have developers in India accessing a VSS database here
in the USA and generally it works pretty well. One of the
main benefits is that it works using a Client application
which talks to a Server application which usually runs on
your VSS Server. This eliminates a lot of the back and
forth chatter that the normal VSS Client has (which is the
main reason for the slow speed). The SourceOffSite
product also does data compression when actually sending
the files from the Server to the Client. Large files such
as EXE files that are already compressed will still take a
while to transfer, but over all our engineers in India are
happy with this product.

Good Luck!

And here are some other tips from Microsoft on running with relatively slow
connections (which to VSS is anything less than 10Mbps, it seems)

Use a real Source Control package like Clear Case

Turning off the anti-virus made a day and night difference for me.
