I picked up a book to learn Visual basic but cannot install it on my
system after I download it from this site: http://www.microsoft.com/express/Windows/.

I'm assuming my pc is the problem, but have no idea where to start.

It seems to stat installing, but then I get a pop-up that says:
"Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition with SP1 - ENU has
encountered a problem during setup. Setup did not complete correctly."

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

What O/S are you using?

Several possible causes:
1) Do you have any other pre-release or beta versions of .Net language
packages, utilities, or Framework installed?
If so uninstall them.
(Previous 'Released' versions are OK.)
2) You are running 'As Admininstrator'?
Also check that Anti-Virus software is not complaining someplace in the
background. You might want to temporarily turn it off.
3) Check in Settings -> Services that the Windows Installer Service has not
been turned off.

If you are still having trouble, you might return with the last twenty or so
lines of the error log the install will create. Exactly where that file is
depends on your O/S. There should be instructions in the book.

Window XP.

None at all.

No antivirus installed.

I'm not sure what that is or how to get there.

To check and start the Windows Installer service

Go to settings -> Services -> "Windows Installer"
- or
Start -> Run -> type: "Services.msc" Enter

Double-click "Windows Installer"
Set Startup Type to Manual
Click 'Start'

[Don't have Windows XP in front of me so the instructions are general for
all O/Ss.]

I miss understood. I saw "book" and thought you had purchased one of the MS
publications that provides a CD copy. Those books often include additional
information (in the appendix and on the CD). I see now that you are
attempting to download from the MS Express site.

After insuring the Installer service is running try again.
If this doesn't work then you probably have to contact MS.
Click on the Link "Product Feedback Center" at
http://www.microsoft.com/express/support/support-faq.aspx

You can do some additional searching on the web. There appears to quite a
list of exotic items that may cause this problem.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

The Start Up type is already set to manual.

I made a few attempts and it looks like it is installing but then it
fails.

Perhaps this is my signal to try another language.

Thanks anyway.

You might keep checking to see if the Windows Installer itself keeps
shutting down and then restart it at every pause - and also investigate the
logs to see if there are any hints as to why?

Based on your comments in another group, neither the "Visual Basic Windows
Development" or the "Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition" are likely to be
very useful for you.
