I had a similar experience after formatting a hard drive, then reinstalling
Win XP (SP2), then trying to install VS 2005 Pro. The log indicated that MS
Document Explorer could not be installed because some prerequisite was
missing.
By pure luck, I installed MS Office (2003, but I think an older version
would do.), then retried VS 2005. After installing Office, the VS 2005
install went to completion without incident.
I was going to ask about this in a separate thread, but is there something
in Office needed by the Document Explorer?
If you have Office, try installing it, then retry VS 2005 ?!?

If you get an answer to this is there any chance you could let me know what
it is?
I am experiencing the exact same problem on XP Pro (SP2). I used the
uninstall tool to remove the beta 2, and it appears it got everything, so I
am not sure what to make of the problem.
