We have been using Source safe 6.0d on a local fast ethernet switched
network and it is working flawlessly. However when our engineers are at home
and want to checkout files to modify it is very slow. Is there something
that we need to do to get Soursafe to work faster over a Broadband
connection. Their connections are pretty fast (1mb donwload 256 upload) and
the Office Broadband connection is very quick (1mb+). I takes about 10sec to
get the right click menu and it takes about qa minuet or more to checkout a
file.

If anyone has an indea please let me know.

Thanks
Robert

Hi Robert,

Based on my research and experience, the following article is useful to you.

Visual SourceSafe
Working from Home (Using RAS)
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/guides/html/vstskWorking_from_Home.a
sp

In addition, I highly suggest using Offline projects if it is possible.

I hope it helps.

Hi,

based on my experience in working with Sourcesafe in a team that was
spread over America and Europe, the only practical way to go is
SourceOffsite from SourceGear:

as you have witnessed, remote access through a vpn to the vss files is
not necessarily the most effecient way to access your sourcesafe
repositories.

if you are looking for alternatives, have you seen this link from the
vss web site? - http://msdn.microsoft.com/ssafe/headlines/offer.asp

sourceoffsite was designed specifically for this purpose.

We are not in the market to buy very expensive software to solve this
problem. We might as well go to open source CVS!
thanks anyway,
Robert

Have a look at these other products:

VssConnect (http://www.voxcode.com)
Sekonden SourceWeb (http://sourceweb.sekonden.se/SekondenITAB.htm)
VSS.net (http://www.dmbcllc.com/products.htm)

Joe,
Thank You.

I hope at some point that Microsoft Pays attention to this problem and
realizes that engineers are not always all in the same place.

Thanks,
Robert

To Everyone,

I Looked at the software and yet again these guys do not know how to sell
software at a resonable price. I have just tole my guys to get faster
Broadband connections and we hope that fixes it.

If anyone has a suggestion other than trying to sell me overpriced software
I would really appeciate it. 100 dollars per client license is way to high.

Thanks again

Are your developers working for free or are you just cheap?
