A Visio user in my office created a Visio drawing, but when she tried to
print the drawing, her computer shutdown. She emailed the drawing to other
Visio users, and the same thing happened to them. The shutdown only occurs
on network printers. If the printer is set up on a local printer, the
drawing prints without issue. Since most users in the corporation do not
have local printers and use only a network printer, this is causing an issue.
Is there a setting within Visio that is causing the shutdown?

I haven't heard of anything like that. What happens when you print a new
blank drawing to a network printer? What's the print driver/version? What
port is the printer mapped to? What version/service pack of Visio?

A blank document does the same thing - shutdowns the entire computer. The
printer driver is HPC24306.gpd. The port is Standard TCP/IP port. We are
using 2003 Professional version of Visio - 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600.

1. If it happens on new blank drawings in Visio the next logical step would
be to repair Visio.
2. If that doesn't fix it, starting Visio in application safe mode by
holding down the Ctrl key when you start Visio will disable any add-ons,
templates, etc... to rule those out
3. Running anti-virus scan and make sure that's on the latest scan engine,
you can also tryout our free online scan (http://safety.live.com)
4. You could also test by disabling all startup items and non-Microsoft
services by using the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe)
5. And try updating to the latest service pack for Visio 2003 (SP3) and run
Windows Updates.

Hope that helps,

I'm having the exact same problem, except it's also happening to printers
using USB Printing. I've had four different computers have the same problem.
We've tried Visio 2000, Visio 2007 Std and Pro, and they've all done this
immediate shutdown problem. Visio 2003 Viewer doesn't seem to do this,
though. This also appears to be related to one specific document, as other
documents don't give this issue. A blank document doesn't cause this problem
either.

We're sort of stumped. What can we do about this?

With problems related to specific drawings, one approach is to 'divide and
conquer'. If it is a multi-page drawing, check each page. It may be
related to objects or corruption on a specific page, for instance.

There's a comprehensive article on troubleshooting drawing issues in the KB
here :
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;826418

I suggest following the steps for saving the file as XML and back to VSD,
as this often 'strips off' small problems in files. Make sure that you
save to new names, so that you can compare to the original version to see
if any items were removed. You will see XML warnings about problems
sometimes, you may get more info from that report as well.

provides a hotfix for this issue. It's related to a few print drivers that
cause crashing after a certain other hotfix is applied.

After installing this hotfix on affected computers, the problem was resolved.
