Hi
Would any one know of a thumbnail viewer, that will show thumbnail views in
Windows Explorer?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Visio's thumbnails appear in Windows Explorer without any other tool.

Under File > Properties in Visio, there is an option to check/uncheck a
document's Preview Picture.

If you are having trouble seeing thumbnails, then perhaps you have unchecked
this option (it saves file size!) or you have old documents created with
versions of Visio that didn't contain this feature.

Thanks for your answer

My problem may be that I'm using Visio 2000?

In fact, I'm not the one having the problem, my friend is.

On his old PC, my friend claims that he was able to see thumbnail views in
Windows Explorer, and he is using V2000.

On his new PC, thumbnail view is gone. I have tried reinstalling Visio, to
no avail. I tried a fresh install on another PC, to no avail.
I tried installing the Visio 2003 Viewer, to no avail.

As I understand, to show thumbnails in Explorer one needs an ActiveX Object,
capable of showing Visio drawings, registered as an Shell Extention.

So far I havn't been able to find any solution.

Will installing a newer version of Visio give me thumbnails?

Best regards

Visio 2000 should not be a problem and you should not need a special
ActiveX. Visio stores a preview image in the file (if asked) and this is the
image displayed in the thumbnails. Some viewers claimd to support Visio
files, but all they were doing was displaying the preview image.

Open one of these files and see what the Properties page says for the file.
There should be a check mark for "Save Preview Picture"

Can't make it work.

I tried: File -> Properties -> Summary, selected Preview First page,
selected Quality Detailed (tried Draft aswell).

Still no preview.

I have been struggeling with this issue for more than 3 days now, and is a
little lost.

Any ideas?

Is Visio installed on the machine where you are trying to view thumbnails?

Yes, Visio 2000 is installed.

Just to prevent any misunderstandings: I have no problem seeing previews in
Visio "File Open". The problem is seeing thumbnails in Windows (XP)
Explorer.

Maybe there was more to this process in Visio 2000. The way I understand
this mechanism, Visio registers its file extensions with Windows upon
installation. Then when Windows needs a thumbnail, it launches Visio (the
entire application does not load) and Visio extracts the thumbnail
information from the file to pass to Windows.

Thanks for your respond.

Could you, by chance, tell me what it takes to get thumbnails in Explorer;
is there a burnproof way of getting Visio thumbnails?

With your current setup, do you have thumbnails?
If yes: which version of Visio do you have installed (well, most current I
guess)?

Just for the record:
I have got Bmp, Png, jpg and Gif thumbnails.
I have got PowerPoint and Word doc thumbnails (if I check: "Save Preview").

Hovever no Visio thumbnails.

Best regards

I am using Visio 2003, so I can't readily see what may be happening with
Visio 2000.
