MS Project 2007 data corruption on opening

On 2 installations of MS Project 2007 Professional I have encountered a
problem with data being corrupted on opening. The Project is Sorted and
saved correctly but when it is opened the ID number follows the position
number at which the Task was originally entered. This problem did not exist
in 2003 and it appears as if on opening the Task list is being sorted without
the "Permanently renumber Tasks" setting being retained from the original
Sort. Any knowledge on this would be very helpful.
