I have heard that the future support for the shell namespace extension are
very shaky at best.

I also heard Oracle was going to base their database Mngt architecture
around Shell Namespace
extensions and because of this uncertainty changed their mind.

Does anybody know what Microsoft Official future support is for Shell
Namespace extensions?

Is anybody starting a new development of commercial software using Shell
Namespace extensions?

Reza,

I actually hadn't heard that.

I would suppose that there would be some requirement to keep the current
support, even if the architecture may shift in such a way that it leads
down a dead-end.

I suspect that there will be different support under the new shell. In
particular, there appear to be new interfaces (such as IDelegateFolder)
which will improve/change the support for namespace extensions.

I think that after the PDC next week we may have a better idea, or at least
have had an opportunity to ask some questions.

I recently shipped a new ATL-based Namespace Extension product for the
healthcare industry for a client of mine. My namespace added a "My
Hospital" icon next to the built-in "My Computer" icon. The namespace shows
hospital data stored in a SQL Server database, like patients, doctors, case
status board, etc.

I think that namespace development is alive and well. Not only has
Microsoft already released a good deal of documentation, not to mention the
July 1996 MSJ article, but I believe there is a very good chance that the
namespace docs. will be much improved with the advent of Internet Explorer
4.0.

IE4's new "Web View" *is* a new namespace extension. You can bet that a
great deal of attention has been paid to this topic within MS recently.
