I installed VS2008 on a laptop last week and find that the installation
isn't the same as on my desktop of last year. I used the
en_visual_studio_2008_professional_x86_x64wow_dvd_X14-26326.iso file.

The installation of last week is missing include files - in particular
afxcontrolbars.h - since the compilation of stdafx.cpp fails. When I look
at the VC\atlfmc\include\ folder there is afxadv.h followed directly by
afxcmn2.inl. There's about 13 files missing here - including the
afxcontrolbars.h that started the search. I presume that there are probably
other discrepancies - this is just the first one that I found.

I tied to repair the installation but the installer just seems to churn it's
way through a full installation again with the same results. I checked for
any updates and there were none found.

When I look at the working version, the Help>About... I get the information
listed at the end of this message. The non-working version has an identical
Help>About with the exception that the last two lines are missing:

VS2008 Professional Edition - ENU Service Pack 1 (KB945140) KB945140
VS2008 Professional Edition - ENU Service Pack 1 (KB947888) KB947888

I did check for updates but this Service Pack 1 wasn't found!

Is there anything that I can do to get the system working?

I'm running XP Professional on the machine where VS works. The laptop has
XP Home.

Tom,

That worked like a charm. Thanks.
