monitoring input level of mic using API

trying to monitor the input level of a microphone using the controltype

"MIXERCONTROL_CONTROLTYPE_UNSIGNEDMETER"
after calling
mixergetlinecontrols using the "MIXER_GETLINECONTROLSF_ALL" flag

this woks if I want to find the VOLUME control
(MIXERCONTROL_CONTROLTYPE_VOLUME) and unsignedmter is listed as a valid
control but my function returns unable to find this control

I am trying to find this function on the audio line
"MIXERLINE_COMPONENTTYPE_SRC_MICROPHONE" obtained using the
mixerGetLineInfo function.

also has anyone found any beginners documentation on Multimedia APIs
rather than the WAITE group vol 3 bible.
