Put another way: All SQL Server versions can be accessed by a VB6
application.
Driver or Provider needed will depend on the data access library being used
and the version of SQL Server.

I had downloaded SQL SERVER 2005 Express Ed.. but it rebooted the system
repeatedly..ultimately i had to format the system

Ouch! That doesn't sound right.
I doubt the problem had anything to do with VB6, dotNet, or any other
development platform you have installed. Google for SQL Server Express
install problems.
